How to Prepare for the SFI Exam
Prepare for the SFI exam with practical study routines for reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and grammar.
Start with the skills the exam tests
SFI exam preparation is not only memorising words. You need to practice reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and grammar in a way that matches real tasks.
Your teacher is the best source for exact exam expectations in your course. Use this guide as a study structure beside class.
Reading practice
Read short practical texts:
- notices from school or work
- messages from authorities
- appointment reminders
- apartment or job ads
- simple articles
After reading, answer three questions:
- What is the text about?
- What action does the reader need to take?
- Which words are new or important?
Writing practice
Practice common writing tasks:
| Task | Example |
|---|---|
| Message | Write to cancel an appointment |
| Ask a teacher a question | |
| Description | Describe your routine |
| Opinion | Explain what you think and why |
Keep sentences clear. Correct Swedish is useful, but understandable Swedish is the first goal.
Listening practice
Listening improves when you repeat the same topic several times. Choose one topic, listen, write keywords, then listen again.
Good topics:
- time and appointments
- directions
- workplace instructions
- school information
- healthcare conversations
Speaking practice
Prepare short answers for common questions:
- Tell me about yourself.
- What do you do on a normal day?
- What did you do last weekend?
- What are your plans?
- What do you think about living in Sweden?
Say answers aloud. Record yourself if that helps you notice pauses and pronunciation.

Do not ignore everyday Swedish
SFI is connected to life. Practice forms, messages, appointments, shopping, transport, and work phrases. The more useful Swedish you meet outside class, the less exam language feels artificial.
